The confluence between Business, Technology, and Customers

What is Triple Confluence?

The Triple Confluence is a concept referring to balancing Customer, Technology, and Business needs.

In traditional Project Management there is a concept called the Triple Constraint. It refers to the limits placed on a project due to time, scope, or cost. These constraints are tied together, and if one changes the others must change as well. For example, if the Scope of a project changes, either the cost or time for that project must change to accommodate.

The Triple Confluence is a similar idea, however instead of dealing with linked constraints, the Triple Confluence prefers to see the confluence of its three components as additive. In fact, each component is dependent upon the others to reach their goals. You can’t have one without the others.

Right about now, you may be asking: “But aren’t they really still just constraints? For example, if you have less Technology, can’t you meet less Business or Customer needs?” This is only true at the surface. You don’t really need more Technology to meet more Business or Customer needs. This is an opportunity for creativity to come into play, and that’s where the challenge of a truly successful product lies.
